2012/13 Thailand, Koh Tao

One of the three famous islands in Gulf of Thailand (two others are Koh Samui and Koh Phangan), in theory it is the one that is the least damaged by tourism. At least this is what I was hoping for when boarding the ferry to Chumphon (a small but very comfortable ferry with air conditioning; the return trip will not be so comfortable anymore – I get on board of what could be described as chickenboat – 150 people stuffed on narrow mattresses, toilet with no water, windows that won’t shut…).
When I get there I discover that Koh Tao is full of Europeans who came here to admire underwater views (the island is famous for its transparent waters and rich sea fauna) and taste the evening alcohol.
However, if you leave the partying whiteys and hotels invading the land more and more out of the frame, you can still be amazed by the island. Numerous beaches of all kinds (sandy, stony), high palm trees, colorful butterflies, scenic hills and boulders thrown here and there make you feel that you are not that far away from paradise.

Mnogość plaż we wszelkich odmianach (piaszczyste, kamieniste), strzeliste palmy, kolorowe motyle, malownicze wzgórza i porozrzucane to tu, to tam głazy koją zmysły i budują klimat rajskości (umiarkowanej).

Sairee Beach
The most popular beach, meeting point for those who set off for diving; a party and sleeping place.

East coast of the island. Stones, scenics. You have to climb a steep hill before you get there – you won’t be able to do it on an ordinary scooter.

Temple of Goddess of Mercy / Świątynia Bogini Miłosierdzia
Located on the peak of the hill – it might not be very impressive as for architecture but it makes a nice refuge from the Sairee bustle as well as a tap with cold water. I also meet a monk from Korea here, who suddenly gives me a blessing and even does not insist on a donations as he had just received a 1000 baht banknote from another blessed person.
